Structural Biology and Medicinal Chemistry Approaches Toward the Discovery of New Bioactive Compounds: Applications in Infectious Diseases

Modern drug discovery involves the employment of a wide variety of technologies and expertise in multidisciplinary research teams. The synergistic effects between experimental and computational approaches assist our understanding of the fundamental principles of protein-ligand interactions. In this context, the combination of available knowledge of 3D protein structures with medicinal chemistry methods is attractive to the discovery and development of bioactive compounds as new leads for drug design. This talk will provide a perspective of the utility of the integration between structural biology and medicinal chemistry strategies in drug discovery and design. Several cases will be discussed to highlight the impact of these methods toward the development of new candidates for infectious diseases.
